Pithos is a cloud file storage service, funded by GRNET, that is offered to the Greek academic and research community via a Shibboleth federation. It is based on a scalable information system offering a REST API, WebDAV access, and multiple user interface (web rich client, mobile clients, XUL desktop app / firefox plugin). It is designed to be deployed in virtualized, cloud environments and can easily scale up to support thousands of users. Its core server is a full JEE application that runs on multiple JBoss AS instances (without clustering or session replication) and the main user interface is a GWT-based rich web client. The server and web client is open source software: GSS, which is supplemented by various clients, also open sourced: fireGSS, a XUL client / Firefox plugin, gssDroid an Android mobile client, and igss, an iOS mobile client.
The Pithos service operation is supported by GRNET NOC, while EBS maintains and continuously extends GSS and provides new releases and fixes since version 1.0 (2007). During the last two years, the open source project is getting a life of its own.
Currently GSS development is sponsored by GRNET and EBS.
